Authorities in Constantine and Skikda have seized nearly 200 kilograms of silver mercury and arrested 13 suspects in two separate operations targeting the illicit trade of dangerous chemicals used in illegal gold mining. In Constantine, organized crime units dismantled two groups, confiscating 176 kg of mercury along with a transport vehicle and illicit cash. Meanwhile, in Azzaba (Skikda), security forces raided a clandestine workshop, arresting four men and seizing 17.77 kg of mercury, a truck, precision scales, and rock fragments containing gold traces. Mercury is a strictly prohibited substance due to its severe toxicity to human health and groundwater, yet it remains highly sought after by illegal prospectors to extract gold from ore. All 13 individuals have been referred to the public prosecutor to face charges related to the smuggling and trafficking of hazardous materials.
