Saudi candidate for WHO leadership outlines her inaugural vision and priorities

Dr. Hanan Balkhy, Saudi Arabia's candidate for the role of WHO Director-General, stated that her first act would be to recalibrate the relationship between the organization and its member states, emphasizing that countries should lead while the organization focuses on listening and enabling. She underscored that restoring trust requires scientific transparency and safeguarding technical experts from political interference. To ensure sustainable funding, Balkhy aims to increase the share of assessed contributions to 50% by the 2030-2031 cycle. With a three-decade career in medicine and experience as the Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, she stressed that the WHO's success should be judged by its real-world impact and its ability to foster domestic manufacturing of medical supplies and respond effectively to global health crises.
