Djanet Declaration: A New Strategy to Protect African Rock Art
The first International Rock Art Festival in Djanet, organized under the patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, concluded with the adoption of the 'Djanet Declaration.' This foundational document establishes a framework for preserving rock art across the Tassili n’Ajjer region and Africa. The strategy emphasizes upgrading scientific methods through digital technologies and centralized databases for inventory purposes. Addressing both environmental and human threats, the declaration calls for stronger legal protections against vandalism and illicit trafficking of artifacts. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of involving local communities and providing training for indigenous stakeholders to ensure the long-term conservation and monitoring of these universal cultural treasures.
