Benjamin Stora: French media uses Algeria as a scapegoat for domestic crises

French historian Benjamin Stora has criticized the way some French media outlets use Algeria as a scapegoat to explain France's internal problems, including unemployment, insecurity, and the high cost of living. During his participation in the Algiers International Book Fair, Stora argued that this discourse reflects a colonial mindset, citing baseless accusations linking Algeria to protests that occurred in October 2026. He added that such narratives aim to reproduce the colonial social structure that denies Algerians equal rights. Furthermore, he noted that the negative stereotyping of Islam is a continuation of this colonial legacy. Stora also pointed out that pressure from the far-right is slowing down the memory reconciliation process, noting that addressing the past requires sustained efforts that go beyond political disputes.
