Brussels – As part of its series of activities commemorating the 65th anniversary of the October 17, 1961 demonstrations, which coincides with the National Migration Day, the General Consulate organized on October 18, 2026, in the Belgian city of Ghent, in cooperation with the Algerian sports and cultural academy "DZ Académie" and the association "S12 Belgium Impact ASBL", and with the participation of members of the Algerian community in Belgium, a football tournament for children of the community residing in the city and its suburbs. This activity is part of a series of events that the Consulate is keen to organize to commemorate national historical milestones and strengthen the connection of community members to their motherland. The event began with the national anthem and a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the massacres committed by the French colonial authorities against Algerian demonstrators in Paris, to honor their memory and recall their sacrifices for independence. The program included football competitions for youth categories, as well as a pétanque tournament, and concluded with the distribution of cups and medals to the participants. This initiative is part of efforts to revive national memory, entrench it in the rising generations, and strengthen the spirit of belonging and connection to the history of Algeria.
