President Tebboune orders deployment of national army units to Niger to secure strategic interests
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered the deployment of Algerian National People's Army units to Niger to safeguard joint energy and economic interests. This move follows a unanimous vote by both chambers of the Algerian Parliament during an extraordinary session held on Sunday, October 25. According to an official statement from the Presidency, the operation is a response to a formal request from the Nigerien authorities. The mission is carried out under the legal framework of the 2020 Constitution, specifically articles 30 and 91, which allow the President—as supreme commander of the armed forces—to deploy troops abroad following parliamentary approval. The deployment aims to reinforce security around key infrastructure projects, such as the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline and the Trans-Saharan Highway, against regional security threats.
