In commemoration of National Tree Day on October 25, the province of Jijel has officially launched a major national reforestation campaign to restore forest cover lost during the intense wildfires of summer 2026. The initiative involves planting 25,000 seedlings across 18 municipalities, forming part of a broader national plan to plant 1.2 million trees during the 2026-2027 season. The launch ceremony, held in the Soumaa area, saw participation from local authorities, civil society, the forestry services, the People's National Army, and the Civil Protection. Efforts focus on planting economically and nutritionally valuable species such as olive, chestnut, and carob trees. While this campaign represents a significant starting point, the scale of destruction remains immense, with over 4 million fruit trees destroyed across the country in recent months, highlighting the need for sustained long-term restoration efforts.
