Local elections: Appeals process underway as some parties face threat of dissolution

Following the deadline for candidate registration for the November 28 local elections, political parties and independent lists are now reviewing their filings. They are awaiting responses from the Independent National Authority for Elections to determine if they must file legal appeals against rejected dossiers or provide substitute candidates where permitted. Some groups struggled with candidate recruitment during the initial phase. Beyond the immediate campaign, smaller parties face legal risks; under the organic law on political parties, the Minister of the Interior may seek the dissolution of any party that fails to field candidates for at least two consecutive electoral events. Such dissolutions are not automatic and require a ruling by the competent judicial authorities. The final list of competitors will be known prior to the campaign launch on November 5.
