New novel revisits the "Bigeard shrimp" tragedy of the Algerian War

In his latest novel, "The Shrimp Victim", author Mouhoub Rafik delves into a harrowing chapter of French colonial history in Algeria: the extrajudicial killings known as the "Bigeard shrimp". During the 1957 Battle of Algiers, captured Algerians were drowned in the Mediterranean after their bodies were weighed down with concrete. Through the protagonist Tahar, the narrative bridges personal experience with the backdrop of the Revolution, examining themes of survival and collective memory. Despite General Marcel Bigeard's previous denials of these practices, the book serves as a literary documentation of this human tragedy, forcing a reflection on the fate of the missing. This novel joins Rafik's existing body of work, which consistently analyzes Algerian history through a reflective and narrative lens.
