Sahrawi Ambassador reaffirms commitment to self-determination

At the 51st anniversary of national unity held in Algiers, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic Ambassador Khatri Addouh stated that the UN Committee's recent resolution reaffirms the Sahrawi cause as a decolonization issue. The ambassador cautioned against ignoring legal frameworks and called on the Security Council to fulfill its historic duties to ensure a lasting settlement. He further demanded the release of political prisoners held in Moroccan jails and information regarding those missing since 1975. Recalling the October 1975 national unity milestone, Addouh highlighted its pivotal role in the struggle for independence, referencing the International Court of Justice opinion which found no territorial sovereignty that would negate the right to self-determination. Said Ayachi, head of the Algerian committee for solidarity with the Sahrawi people, also emphasized the necessity of continued international support. Various political and civil society representatives echoed this, labeling the UN's recent adoption of the resolution as a victory for the Sahrawi cause.
