CAF reverts to biennial format for Africa Cup of Nations
The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unanimously reversed its decision to transition the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a four-year cycle. The tournament will return to its traditional biennial schedule. CAF stated that the move is driven by financial concerns, as the projected African Nations League, which was intended to replace the two-year AFCON format, cannot yet generate sufficient revenue to sustain the continent's football development. CAF President Patrice Motsepe explained that this decision aims to protect the interests of member associations and players. This policy reversal follows significant criticism regarding CAF's independence from FIFA and internal controversies, including the heated legal dispute surrounding the 2025 AFCON final.
