Mauritania: Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Diay resigns

Mauritanian Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Diay has submitted the resignation of his government to President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. This move follows the submission of an investigative report regarding the power station fires that struck Nouakchott last August. The official inquiry concluded that the fires were caused by sub-standard electrical components imported by a private firm, highlighting negligence by both the company and specific officials at the Ministry of Energy. Ould Diay, who had been in office since August 2024, expressed his gratitude to the President while accepting responsibility for any shortcomings during his tenure. Although official statements did not explicitly confirm a connection between the report and the resignation, the events occurred simultaneously. Ould Diay was the third Prime Minister appointed during President Ghazouani’s administration.
