The Resume Inflation: When exaggerated qualifications hinder job searches
Recruitment in Algeria is facing a growing trend where job seekers embellish their resumes with fictional skills and unearned certifications. Many candidates falsely claim mastery of foreign languages or expertise in fields where they have never worked. A notable case involved a father submitting his daughter's resume, which boasted 78 diverse certificates—ranging from culinary arts to clinic management—issued by questionable institutions, despite the applicant lacking a high school diploma. This practice of resume inflation, often fueled by purchasing fake credentials, has led employers to become increasingly skeptical. Consequently, many companies now disregard extensive paper credentials, preferring to rely on practical aptitude tests to verify the true skills of applicants.
