African Union calls for increased investment in post-conflict reconstruction

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has called for stronger political and financial support for reconstruction and development efforts in regions recovering from conflict. Marking the 20th anniversary of the AU's Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) policy, he emphasized that recovery strategies must be central to long-term peacebuilding. The chairperson highlighted the necessity of restoring essential services and economic opportunities under national leadership, while stressing that reconciliation and accountable institutions are vital to preventing the recurrence of violence. Over the past twenty years, the AU has institutionalized its support, notably through its Cairo-based center. Youssouf urged improved coordination among member states, regional bodies, and international partners to ensure predictable funding. He also advocated for the meaningful inclusion of women and youth in reconstruction programs, while prioritizing the safety, education, and welfare of children.
