Russia vetoes US-backed resolution on Western Sahara at UN Security Council
Russia has exercised its veto power at the UN Security Council to block a US-drafted resolution concerning Western Sahara. Despite receiving support from 11 members, the Russian veto prevented the resolution from passing, with three members choosing to abstain. Just before the vote, Moscow presented a competing draft calling for a one-year extension of the MINURSO mission until October 31, 2027, emphasizing a fair resolution based on the principle of self-determination, which the US subsequently voted against. This move represents a shift in Russia's approach, moving away from its historically cautious stance to directly challenge the US proposal, which it argued would change the nature of the conflict. The developments have triggered urgent negotiations within the UN to find a compromise acceptable to all parties involved.
