Algeria and Niger strengthen ties: A strategic shift in the Sahel region
Relations between Algeria and Niger have reached a new milestone, characterized by a renewed commitment to historical ties and regional stability. Algeria’s decision to deploy military contingents to the Nigerien territory reflects a strategic shift in its defense doctrine, shifting from passive border protection to active regional security to combat threats such as arms trafficking and armed groups. This cooperation is deeply rooted in significant economic projects, including the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) and various infrastructure initiatives like fiber optic networks and trans-continental roads. By fostering this partnership, both nations aim to secure critical trade corridors, facilitating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Ultimately, this move illustrates Algeria's proactive efforts to stabilize its immediate environment to protect its broader economic and strategic interests across the Sahel.
