It is high time for Algerians to take charge of documenting their own national history, rather than waiting for archives from the former colonial power. Over 132 years, France committed numerous atrocities, such as the use of chemical weapons and summary executions, while concealing the evidence. Promises to hand over archives or clarify the fate of missing persons have remained unfulfilled. During the first national forum on history and memory, lawyer and researcher Fatma-Zohra Benbraham emphasized that Algerian history cannot be defined by colonial perspectives. Supported by testimonies archived by the Ministry of Mujahideen and documentation sourced from other countries, Algeria now has the means to construct its national narrative independently, in accordance with the country's Constitution and its duty to preserve memory for future generations.
