UN Security Council draft resolution on Western Sahara shifts away from Morocco's position
Morocco faces renewed diplomatic setbacks as the UN Security Council prepares to vote on a new resolution concerning Western Sahara. The final draft, led by the United States, prioritizes the principle of self-determination over the autonomy plan, moving the concept into the operational clauses of the text. Furthermore, the draft removes previous grievances directed at the Polisario Front and scraps plans to reduce Minurso’s military personnel or set a firm deadline for the mission's conclusion. Russia has reaffirmed its commitment to international law, stating that its stance remains unchanged and must align with the UN Charter. This shift comes as hopes in Rabat for an imposed autonomy solution have waned, following recent comments by Donald Trump's advisor, Massad Boulos, indicating that no viable solution is currently foreseeable.
