Western Sahara: Algeria reaffirms the right to self-determination at the UN
During a recent UN Security Council session, Algeria reiterated its firm stance in favor of the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination. Representing its historic diplomatic commitment to oppressed nations, Algeria emphasized that international justice cannot be achieved without addressing the rights of colonized peoples. This position is anchored in the 1960 UN General Assembly Resolution 1514, the cornerstone of decolonization. Algeria strictly rejects any attempts to bypass international legality or to legitimize colonial occupation through imposed solutions. Following Russia's veto of a US-proposed resolution favorable to Morocco, the Sahrawi issue remains firmly positioned within the UN framework as a decolonization matter, requiring the organization to fulfill its obligation to organize a referendum.
