Tunisia: New protests planned following October 17 rally
The "For Tunisia and Tunisians" coordination body has announced plans for upcoming nationwide and regional protest actions. This initiative follows the October 17 demonstration in the capital, where various national organizations rallied for social, economic, and political reforms.
The coalition, which includes the UGTT, the journalists' union, and the human rights league, is calling for urgent attention to declining purchasing power and the poor state of public services. The group criticizes the current centralization of decision-making and demands stronger guarantees for public freedoms, judicial independence, and fair trial rights. To broaden the reach of the movement, the collective is establishing regional branches to better address localized concerns.
While the goal is to build on the momentum of the previous march, which brought together thousands of citizens, labor unions, and civil society groups, the organizers have not yet specified dates or locations for the upcoming events. The movement continues to advocate for deeper dialogue between the government and civil society to address the country's economic and social challenges.
