Gdeim Izik detainees challenge US draft resolution on Western Sahara
Sahrawi political prisoners from the Gdeim Izik group have sent an urgent letter to the UN Security Council to denounce the US-drafted resolution concerning Western Sahara. They argue that the document violates international law and the fundamental right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence. Addressing the Security Council president, the detainees urged the body to amend the text, warning against attempts to force a political solution that ignores the decolonization process. They emphasized that the question remains tied to UN Resolution 690 of 1991, which established the MINURSO mission. The group warned that shifting the mission's mandate would favor the occupying power and undermine the chances for a just settlement. Furthermore, the detainees have initiated an indefinite hunger strike to protest these developments, holding the US administration and Moroccan authorities accountable for their physical safety and calling for the protection of their right to self-determination.
