UN Vote on Cuba Embargo: Shifting Stances Among Arab Nations
The UN General Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the lifting of the US embargo on Cuba, securing 130 votes in favor, 17 against, and 25 abstentions. This result reflects a decline in support compared to the previous year, following strong US diplomatic pressure. Notable shifts were observed among Arab countries: Morocco and the UAE switched their votes to oppose the resolution, while Bahrain and Qatar moved to abstention. Jordan and Somalia chose to abstain from voting entirely. Conversely, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Mauritania, and Tunisia maintained their support for the resolution. Despite its adoption, the measure is not legally binding and does not force the end of the US embargo.
