New book reveals unprecedented insights into the life of President Liamine Zeroual
In his latest work, "President Liamine Zeroual: Journey and Example," author Bachir Frik examines pivotal chapters in the life of the former Algerian president, drawing on firsthand accounts from those who worked alongside him. The book details his early recruitment into the revolution in 1957, his military training in Jordan and Egypt, and his leadership roles during the 1963 Sand War and his defense of borders, notably through the "Terrifying Storm" operation. The author highlights Zeroual's moral stance, such as his refusal to assassinate his former employer in Batna and his resignation as ambassador to Romania, where he refused to accept a salary for work he felt was unearned. The book also covers the circumstances of his appointment as Minister of Defense in 1993 and subsequently as President, noting his efforts toward national reconciliation and dialogue. Regarding the end of his presidency, the work clarifies the internal power struggles of the time, revealing that Zeroual’s decision to call early elections and step down was a premeditated move, as he had informed his family of his intent to return to civilian life in Batna a year prior to his departure.
