Algeria launches the second phase of nuclear site decontamination in In Ekker
On November 1st, the Ministry of National Defense announced the start of the second operation to decontaminate the 'Beryl 2' nuclear test site in In Ekker, Tamanrasset. This project is being carried out entirely by Algerian expertise and resources to clear radioactive waste from past French nuclear experiments. Managed in coordination with the National Agency for the Rehabilitation of Former French Nuclear Test Sites, the process strictly follows international safety standards, with waste being collected and stored in concrete containers. The ministry highlighted that this effort continues despite France's refusal to provide records and maps regarding the burial sites of nuclear waste. Algeria remains committed to the complete cleanup of these areas to enable their future rehabilitation, successfully undertaking this complex challenge independently.
