Luxembourg updates residency permit procedures for non-EU nationals
Starting October 1, 2026, Luxembourg has reformed its immigration process for individuals from non-EU countries, such as Algeria, who intend to stay for more than 90 days. The reform eliminates the former temporary stay authorization in favor of a mandatory long-stay D visa obtained prior to arrival, aligning the country with Schengen area standards. The change applies to work, study, and family reunification purposes. Upon arrival, residents must register with local authorities, undergo a medical check, and apply for a residency permit. Existing permits and applications filed before the reform remain valid under previous regulations. This change also requires local employers to adjust their recruitment processes for foreign staff.
