Algeria and Niger: Strengthening security ties amid regional instability
Algeria is reassessing its regional security strategy as instability in Niger threatens key interests, including the trans-Saharan gas pipeline project. In response to regional geopolitical pressures, Algiers has already deployed military assets, such as Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets and helicopters, to its neighbor. Recent high-level diplomatic exchanges, notably the two visits of Niger’s Defense Minister, General Salifou Mody, to Algeria, have paved the way for deeper security cooperation. With the upcoming parliamentary sessions and recent meetings of the High Security Council, questions arise regarding a potential expansion of military cooperation. Under Article 91 of the Algerian Constitution, the President has the authority to deploy forces abroad, provided there is a two-thirds majority approval from both houses of Parliament, a step viewed as essential to protecting national security and regional stability.
