Wuppertal Begins Construction of First Independent Muslim Cemetery
The German city of Wuppertal has officially begun construction on its first independent Muslim cemetery, a project that followed 18 years of planning and navigating regulatory hurdles. Spanning 19,000 square meters, the burial site is located adjacent to existing Christian and Jewish cemeteries, highlighting the city's commitment to religious diversity. City Mayor Miriam Scherf, who serves as the project's honorary patron, attended the groundbreaking ceremony and praised the site as a living symbol of coexistence. Samir Bouaissa, head of the Muslim Cemetery Foundation, emphasized that the project was a long journey toward securing the right to burials aligned with Islamic rites. The first phase, featuring 1,000 grave plots, is scheduled for completion in March 2027, with later plans to include a public meeting space for visitors.
