Algeria has officially decided to deploy units of its National People's Army to Niger, following unanimous parliamentary approval and a formal request from Nigerien authorities. This historic deployment, the first since independence, aims to safeguard shared economic and energy interests. The initiative reflects Algeria's diplomatic stance that regional stability is intrinsically linked to its own security. Beyond social development projects, the mission seeks to protect vital infrastructure, including the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project and the joint development of the Kafra oil field by Sonatrach and Sonidep. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized the need to defend these investments against institutional instability, terrorist threats, and foreign interference. The presence of Algerian troops is also intended to secure the safety of technical staff on-site while bolstering border security against smuggling and illegal gold mining in the Sahel region.
