Morocco’s diplomatic setbacks: Between strategic failures and fabricated narratives

The Moroccan government is currently grappling with three significant diplomatic defeats, while simultaneously engaging in a narrative campaign that reframes these failures as national triumphs. First, the UN Fourth Committee reaffirmed the Western Sahara file as a decolonization issue, contradicting Moroccan efforts to impose its own perspective. Secondly, Russia’s veto against an American resolution effectively blocked Rabat’s attempt to gain international endorsement for its autonomy plan. Third, the ambitious Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project has been undermined by Nigerian authorities expressing a clear preference for the trans-Saharan route via Algeria and Niger. Despite these clear developments, the state continues to project an image of diplomatic success to its citizens, disregarding the reality of the geopolitical shifts.
