Walking pace: A key factor in boosting health and longevity
Research from the University of Sydney suggests that walking speed is a vital component of physical well-being, even for individuals unable to meet high daily step counts. The study found that walking at a brisk pace of 90 steps per minute, even for just 5,000 steps daily, is linked to a 36% reduction in premature death risk. Greater gains were observed for those combining volume and intensity, with a mortality risk reduction exceeding 40% for those walking 7,500 to 10,000 steps at a pace of 90 to 100 steps per minute. Brisk walking is defined as at least 80 steps per minute. These findings emphasize the necessity of physical activity to mitigate the health risks associated with sedentary lifestyles, as health authorities recommend 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly.
