Amar Bendjama reaffirms the right to self-determination at the UN Security Council

During a UN Security Council session, Algeria's permanent representative, Amar Bendjama, reaffirmed that self-determination remains the essential reference for settling the Western Sahara conflict. Representing a neighboring country affected by this fifty-year-old dispute and a host to hundreds of thousands of Sahrawi refugees, Bendjama emphasized Algeria's commitment to international legitimacy. The session saw Russia exercise its veto power to block a draft resolution on extending the MINURSO mission. Bendjama thanked Russia and other member states for distancing themselves from what he described as a clear injustice, insisting that the Sahrawi people must be free to choose their own future.
