Alicante-Algeria Maritime Traffic: Fewer Passengers, More Vehicles
Maritime activity between the port of Alicante and Algeria has shown mixed results during the first nine months of 2026. Official data from Spanish state ports indicate a 16% drop in passenger numbers, with 124,876 travelers recorded on Algérie Ferries and Nouris Elbahr Ferries compared to 148,646 during the same period in 2025. Conversely, vehicle traffic increased by 4.5%. Luis Rodríguez, head of the Alicante Port Authority, suggests that reduced shipping frequencies, linked to fleet renewal and program reorganization, may account for the decline in travelers. Meanwhile, container traffic continues to climb, showing a 33.5% growth since 2015. Additionally, the Algerian ferry Tariq Ibn Ziyad has been detained at the port since last Wednesday, marking its second such immobilization at this location.
