France under pressure as social unrest continues
France is experiencing intense social tension as protests against the cost of living and poor study conditions continue, with the government failing to address protesters' demands. La France Insoumise has accused the executive of creating disorder by changing march routes at the last minute. Security measures were stringent, involving the deployment of 70,000 police, gendarmes, and soldiers from the Sentinelle operation. The Interior Ministry reported 135 arrests and 136 instances of public disturbance nationwide. While some protests were permitted, others were banned, leading many shopkeepers to board up their premises. In Paris, 24 subway stations were closed. Reports of violence by far-right militants in Montpellier, where police reportedly did not intervene, have caused further controversy, adding to the criticism facing President Emmanuel Macron over his handling of the prolonged national crisis.
