A recent study published in Cancer Communications indicates that obesity may account for over 11% of cancer cases, roughly double previous estimates. Researchers analyzed data from 458,543 individuals tracked for 12 years in the UK Biobank. Unlike earlier studies, this research utilized more accurate markers of body fat, such as waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratios, while adjusting for unintentional weight loss that often precedes a cancer diagnosis. Findings reveal a stronger correlation in women and individuals under 60 years of age. Experts now emphasize that weight management is a more critical tool for cancer prevention than previously recognized. Additional findings further suggest that abdominal fat is linked to lung cancer through immune suppression and that obesity may contribute to the progression of leukemia.
