CAF confirms Africa Cup of Nations will remain a biennial tournament
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially scrapped its reform to move the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a four-year cycle, opting instead to return to the biennial format. The decision was reached unanimously by the Executive Committee on Thursday, October 29. CAF president Patrice Motsepe had previously indicated during a strategy conference in Cape Verde that the initial reform would be reconsidered. The move is largely driven by financial sustainability, as the organization relies on AFCON revenues while its proposed African Nations League project is not yet generating sufficient funds. The 2027 edition remains set for Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Subsequent tournaments are scheduled for 2028, 2031, and 2033, with specific adjustments planned to avoid clashing with the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
