Germany: Immigration fraud scandal involving sham marriages uncovered in Cologne

A significant fraud investigation has hit the immigration department in Cologne, Germany, following the discovery of a network facilitating illegal residency permits. An ex-government official is suspected of organizing sham marriages to help foreign nationals, largely from India, secure residency through family reunification after marrying EU citizens in Cyprus. The official allegedly used her professional status and personal residence to manipulate files, netting approximately 160,000 euros in bribes. Following the arrests of the four suspects in December 2025, the local authorities have revoked the fraudulently obtained residency permits. While the municipality emphasizes that the issue was confined to one individual, it has initiated a review of internal processes to prevent future administrative lapses.
