Shortage of therapeutic infant formula sparks concern among families

Families in Algeria are struggling with a severe shortage of specialized milk for infants allergic to cow's milk protein. Popular therapeutic brands like "Aptamil Pepti Junior" and "Novalac Allernova" have become increasingly difficult to find, leading to excessive price hikes on the secondary market, with some boxes costing up to 12,000 dinars. Given that a single infant requires approximately ten boxes per month, this scarcity is causing significant financial strain. Pediatricians warn that these products are medically necessary, not optional, and that using unsuitable alternatives poses serious health risks, including severe digestive issues and skin reactions. The National Consumer Protection Union has urged the Ministries of Health and Trade to coordinate an immediate review of the supply chain. They emphasized that ensuring a stable supply of these essential nutritional products is a critical priority to protect the health of affected infants.
