Algeria's unique geological sites: Meteorite craters and prehistoric fossils highlighted

At a conference on geological heritage held in Oran, Dr. Ratiba Sahoui from Bab Ezzouar University revealed that Algeria hosts four of Africa’s 30 identified meteorite impact sites. She specifically highlighted the 'Oumguerguiz' crater in Tindouf, dating back 10,000 years, describing it as an exceptional geological site that should be classified as a protected global landmark due to its accessibility. Her findings challenge previous NASA estimates that dated the site to 70 million years ago. Other notable Algerian sites include Talemzane, Tin Bider, and Amguid. Additionally, Dr. Anissa Dahoumane shared 2019 fossil discoveries from Zarzaïtine in Illizi, where remains of extinct crocodile-like amphibians were found, urging for the preservation of the site. The conference emphasized the role of earth sciences in supporting Algeria's national mining and mineral strategy, while fostering academic collaboration.
