Tunisian journalist Zied El-Heni was sentenced to four years in prison with immediate effect on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, by a specialized criminal court in Tunis. The verdict is linked to the "leaked audio recordings" case originating in September 2023, which also resulted in a nine-year sentence for Mondher Ounissi, former interim leader of the Ennahdha movement. The National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) condemned the trial conditions, noting that defense lawyers were denied the right to present their arguments and the defendant was forced to appear via video link from Mornaguia prison. The charges, categorized under anti-terrorism laws, stem from the journalist's efforts to verify information discussed during a radio broadcast. The SNJT argues these proceedings undermine the confidentiality of journalistic sources. El-Heni had previously received other sentences related to his professional commentary and public statements.
