Alarming Rise in Divorce Rates in Algeria: Changing Dynamics of Marriage
Algerian society is experiencing a sharp increase in divorce rates, climbing from 20.9% in 2019 to 33.5% in 2023, which equates to roughly one divorce every six minutes. While 28,000 divorce cases were recorded throughout the year in 2005, that same number is now reached in just four months. Sociologist Mohamed Rouafi explains that this shift stems from a change in how marriage is perceived; whereas marriages in the past relied on rigid roles and societal stability, contemporary couples increasingly demand emotional, psychological, and sexual fulfillment. Factors contributing to this trend include the 2005 Family Code amendments, which granted women greater financial independence, alongside economic pressures and the comparative culture fueled by social media. Experts suggest that a heightened awareness of personal rights and the pursuit of individual happiness have led to a decrease in tolerance for unhappy relationships, making modern couples more likely to seek separation than previous generations who prioritized family cohesion over personal satisfaction.
