Western Sahara: Morocco's diplomatic strategy hits a dead end at the UN

Morocco's attempts to secure international recognition of its autonomy plan for Western Sahara have suffered a significant blow following a Russian veto at the UN Security Council against a US-sponsored resolution. This development highlights the failure of Rabat’s long-standing gamble, which involved deepening ties with Israel and aligning closely with Washington in hopes of securing a diplomatic breakthrough. Since 2020, Morocco has sacrificed significant political capital to push its agenda, but it has failed to account for the resistance of other major powers like Russia and China to unilateral US actions. Despite propaganda claiming a victory in October 2025, the reality remains that the status of the territory, defined by the UN as non-self-governing, cannot be altered by third-party declarations. The recent Security Council session underscored that key global players will not allow Washington to circumvent international law, leaving Morocco’s strategy of normalization with little to show for its efforts.
