Sétif: 18,000 dog and cat bite cases in 2025, with children at highest risk
In 2025, the wilaya of Sétif recorded approximately 18,000 cases of dog and cat bites, highlighting public health challenges regarding rabies prevention. During the second National Symposium on Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, officials noted that half of the victims are under 15 years old, most of whom are school children, while males account for 70% of the cases. The data indicates that bites are split equally between dogs and cats. Notably, half of the dogs involved were owned by individuals, suggesting that domestic animals pose a significant risk without proper oversight. Experts emphasized the critical importance of immediate medical care and vaccination following a bite, as part of a national strategy aiming to eliminate rabies-related deaths by 2030.
