The Dilemma of Linguistic Duality and Its Social Impact in Algeria

In Algeria, the language issue extends beyond communication to touch the core of the socio-economic structure, as the linguistic duality inherited from the colonial era continues to exert its influence. The medical sector serves as a clear example of this intersection, where training in French dominates educational and professional paths. This creates a communication gap with a large portion of patients and contributes to the brain drain of young talent. Language acts as a tool for social stratification, as hiring for elite positions favors French speakers, thereby reinforcing a cycle of cultural dominance. The lack of practical application of the Arabic language in professional environments leads to the emergence of hybrid dialects, which hinders the capacity for expression and critical thinking. It is clear that change cannot be restricted to the education sector alone, but must also address the economic roots of this social division.
