European courts reinforce Western Sahara's separate legal status from Morocco
A legal report released in Madrid highlights that the October 2024 rulings by the European Court of Justice affirm that Western Sahara is a territory legally distinct from Morocco. The report, titled 'Tourism in the Context of Occupation,' argues that EU-Morocco agreements, including aviation pacts, do not encompass the region or its airspace. Consequently, commercial flights to Dakhla face significant legal scrutiny. In response, the Polisario Front has initiated legal proceedings in Spanish courts to revoke Ryanair's permits for flights to Dakhla, asserting that such operations disregard the Sahrawi people's rights and international law regarding the territory's status.
