Western Sahara: Algeria upholds self-determination at the UN Security Council
During a United Nations Security Council session, Algeria reiterated its commitment to the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. Ambassador Amar Bendjama, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized that self-determination remains the cornerstone for a fair conflict resolution, warning against efforts to impose predetermined political solutions. He criticized the failure to consider the concerns raised by Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario Front regarding the proposed text. Furthermore, the Algerian envoy warned against attempts to legitimize colonial status quo and highlighted the difficult humanitarian situation in refugee camps, firmly rejecting the use of aid as a political tool. The proceedings saw the Russian Federation veto the US-sponsored draft resolution. Algeria expressed its appreciation for this stance, favoring a technical renewal of the MINURSO mission mandate in alignment with international law.
