An international conference on the protection of cross-border watercourses, held in Tlemcen on Monday, October 26, highlighted the severe environmental consequences of waste discharged by 400 industrial units in the Moroccan city of Oujda. The pollution affects the Mouilah wadi and the Hammam Boughrara dam, turning vast areas of land into marshes and impacting thousands of farmers. Data presented during the event revealed that chemical concentration levels in these water bodies exceed international standards by over 400 times, causing damage to groundwater and reaching as far as the Abadla dam in the Bechar province. Experts from 19 countries warned that this environmental degradation poses a direct threat to Algeria's food security and emphasized the urgent need for technological solutions to safeguard water resources.
