Western Sahara: Scrutinizing the Revised US Draft Resolution
The US draft resolution on Western Sahara has been revised, shifting the phrasing of the autonomy plan from "the only viable solution" to "the most viable solution." Diplomat Amar Belani noted that while the new version is less restrictive, it still favors an autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty. Significant changes include the abandonment of the automatic transition of MINURSO into a political mission and the removal of fixed military staff reduction targets. Meanwhile, protests have taken place in Laâyoune, where Sahrawi citizens expressed their categorical rejection of any attempt to bypass their right to self-determination. Sidi Mohamed Omar, the Polisario Front's representative to the UN, warned that the Front might withdraw from the peace process if the resolution is adopted, calling on the Security Council to uphold international legitimacy.
