Green Climate Fund approves its first environmental project in Algeria
The Green Climate Fund has approved its inaugural climate project in Algeria, focused on combating desertification and restoring degraded ecosystems. The announcement followed a board meeting in South Korea. Spanning seven years with the support of the FAO, the initiative builds upon the existing Great Green Wall project, covering over 454,000 hectares across six Algerian provinces. The total funding involves a 43-million-dollar grant from the Fund and a 56.5-million-dollar co-financing contribution from the Algerian government. The project is set to benefit over one million people living in arid regions, providing direct assistance to more than 142,000 farmers and livestock breeders. Key interventions include the restoration of 59,000 hectares of land, the deployment of 190 solar power units for rural energy access, the installation of 240 hydroponic units to secure fodder, and improved access to micro-financing for rural entrepreneurs.
