UN Security Council urged to move past the autonomy plan
Since 2007, the United States, with French support, has worked within the UN Security Council to undermine the 1991 peace plan for Western Sahara. Using its position as the 'penholder,' Washington sought to marginalize the referendum in favor of Morocco’s autonomy proposal. However, these attempts faced a setback with the 2025 Resolution 2797, which failed to establish autonomy as the sole solution and reaffirmed the principle of self-determination. Given that the autonomy model has been repeatedly rejected as a definitive fix, analysts argue that the Security Council must now abandon it. Just as the referendum was sidelined in previous years, the autonomy plan should now be removed from the agenda. The path to decolonization, according to this view, lies in a transparent, democratic solution that allows the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination, urging the US to seek new approaches in line with international law.
