European report criticizes France over migrant detention center conditions

A report by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, part of the Council of Europe, has highlighted ongoing human rights abuses within French migrant detention facilities. Based on an October 2025 inspection, the document reveals that detention conditions have worsened since 2018, characterized by poor sanitation, inadequate healthcare, and a lack of proper activities. The committee documented reports of physical abuse, verbal insults, and racist provocation by police officers, alongside rising violence among detainees. Committee president Alan Mitchell condemned the policy of extending detention periods up to 90 days, warning that such conditions create dangerous environments. The report further demands specialized care for unaccompanied minors and calls on French authorities to fulfill their legal obligations to ensure the dignity and fundamental rights of all individuals in custody.
